Jaejun LEE is a Korean ceramicist based in the UK. He moved to the UK from South Korea in 2018 on a Tier 1 ‘Exceptional Talent’ visa. He specialises in porcelain and makes both artistic vessels and functional wares. His aim is to communicate a message of functionality and beauty through his work. LEE wishes for the objects to enrich and enhance people’s everyday lives.
Jaejun LEE works with an electric wheel which helps him control the shapes of the vessels he creates. After a careful process of ‘throwing’, he uses self-created cutting tools to peel out all unnecessary parts within the surface for a smooth line and texture. As a difficult process that requires great concentration, LEE continuously endeavours to reach the perfected shape and weight for each and every work.
For a high-quality finish, he often coats the pots with a matt glaze, created with his own recipe. The thick glaze on the porcelain pots form a richer and smoother texture to his works.
With a meticulous attention to detail, LEE attempts to focus on all parts of the making, placing exceptional care towards areas that may often be unnoticed. Feeling the bottom of LEE’s pots, one would notice that a polishing technique has been used instead of a glaze finish. For LEE, the sense of touch is an important aspect when creating the visual beauty of a craft, hence the choice in materiality is regarded through a thorough research into the form of the pots. He believes that small changes in the making can bring greater pleasure for the audience.
The skills in making is essential in his work, but it is not his aim to merely focus on presenting the use of techniques. It is rather about the attitude, the attitude towards the process of making and the attitude in the usage of the pots in our everyday lives.
LEE wishes for his audience to observe his works in an environment of tranquillity, focusing on the shapes and textures of the surface.
Only then, it will be embraced in your heart.
